Paternity Laws in Tennessee
In the state of Tennessee, a husband is presumed to be the biological father of any child born during the course of a marriage. When a mother has a child and is not married, paternity must be established in a manner consistent with Tennessee law.
A man seeking to establish paternity of a child born out of wedlock must initiate a paternity action. Prior to the establishment of paternity, the biological father has no custody or visitation rights. Likewise, a mother may not collect child support for a child born when she is not married until paternity has been established.
If you are a mother who needs help establishing paternity and seeking a child support order, our experienced paternity lawyers can help. If you are a father who wishes to establish paternity in order to obtain custody or visitation rights, we can help. We also assist mothers and fathers in child support disputes that may arise out of a paternity action.
